This may be right for you if...

  • You have pain, tingling or numbness travelling from your lower back or buttock into your leg.
  • You have been told you may have sciatica, a trapped nerve, a disc problem or nerve irritation.
  • You are worried because the pain feels different from ordinary back pain.
  • You want to know whether chiropractic care is appropriate before committing to anything.
  • You prefer a gentle approach without forceful cracking or twisting.
  • You want a clear explanation in plain English.
  • You want honest advice about what to do next.

Typical sciatica-type symptoms

  • Pain traveling down the leg (thigh, calf or foot)
  • Pins and needles or numbness in the leg or foot
  • Pain worse when sitting, driving or walking
  • Weakness, or a feeling something doesn’t work as it should

(If unsure: the Spinal Health Assessment is a sensible first step in Penrith.)

When to seek urgent medical help

Most back and leg pain is not due to a serious medical emergency. However, some symptoms should be checked urgently.

If you have any of these symptoms, do not wait for a chiropractic appointment. Seek urgent medical advice.

Please seek immediate medical advice if you have:

  • loss of bladder or bowel control
  • difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • numbness around the genitals, bottom or inner thighs
  • severe or worsening weakness in both legs
  • pain, numbness or weakness affecting both legs
  • fever, unexplained weight loss, recent major trauma, or a history of cancer with new back pain

What your first visit is designed to answer

What may be contributing to your symptoms?

I listen carefully and look at how symptoms behave. Pain when sitting may mean something different from pain when walking. Pain into the foot may mean something different from pain into the buttock. Numbness, tingling and weakness need careful checking.

Are there any warning signs?

My job is not just to decide whether chiropractic care may help. It is also to decide whether care is appropriate, whether medical advice is needed, or whether further investigation may be more suitable.

What is the sensible next step?

You will not be left guessing. I will explain what I think is happening, what may be contributing to the problem, and what the options are.

Find out whether gentle chiropractic care is suitable for you.

Gentle chiropractic care without forceful cracking

Many people feel nervous about seeing a chiropractor because they imagine being twisted, cracked or forced into uncomfortable positions.

That is not how I work.

My approach is gentle, careful and adapted to you. I use low-force chiropractic methods, soft tissue work, movement advice and simple exercises where appropriate.

The aim is to work with your body, not force it. If something is not suitable for you, I do not do it.

This approach may be suitable if you are:

  • Nervous about traditional spinal "cracking" techniques
  • Managing longer-term back pain or neck pain in Penrith
  • Living with recurring headaches or posture-related strain
  • Older, or prefer a more measured, conservative approach
  • Looking for a gentle chiropractor in Cumbria who takes time to explain

Why understanding matters

Many people arrive having already tried painkillers, stretches, YouTube exercises, massage, heat, ice or simply waiting.

Sometimes those things help.

Sometimes they don’t, because the problem has not been understood clearly enough.

“No one has ever explained it like this before.”

That is one of the most common things people say to me after their first visit.

When you understand what may be happening, the problem usually feels less frightening. You may still have pain, but you are no longer trying to make sense of it in the dark.

What happens during your assessment?

1. Listening and understanding

I will ask about where your pain travels, what makes it better or worse, whether you have numbness, tingling or weakness, how long it has been going on, and any previous back problems.

2. Assessment of posture and movement

I carry out a careful physical assessment where appropriate. You do not usually need to undress - please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

3. Clear explanation and next steps

I explain what I find, whether gentle care appears suitable, and what sensible options look like.

Peter Bennett - Chiropractor in Penrith

Why see Peter Bennett?

I have spent many years helping people understand back pain, neck pain, spinal stiffness and nerve-related symptoms.

Before becoming a chiropractor, I trained in science and worked in medical research. That background still shapes the way I work.

I like clear explanations.
I like careful reasoning.
And I do not believe in frightening people with complicated language.

When you come to see me, I will try to explain things in a way that makes sense.

Not because a simple explanation fixes everything.
But because understanding what is happening is often the first step towards feeling safer, calmer and clearer about what to do next.
