Hello, I’m Peter Bennett, a chiropractor based in Penrith, Cumbria.
I’ve spent more than 25 years helping people reduce pain, move better, and get more life back into their years.
My approach is gentle — no cracking, no heavy-handed adjustments — just safe, effective techniques that work with your body instead of against it.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the human body is incredibly good at trying to heal itself. My job is simply to understand what it’s trying to do and give it the right support.
People come to see me for all sorts of reasons — stiff backs after gardening, neck pain from long hours at a desk, or just feeling less steady than they used to.
Whatever brings you in, my goal is the same: to help you move more easily and feel more confident doing the things you love.
I believe great healthcare starts with kindness, clear explanations, and respect for each person’s pace. You’ll never be rushed or pressured here — just guided gently toward better movement and lasting results.
When I’m not in clinic, I’m usually outdoors walking in the fells, writing about longevity science, or creating online programs that help people stay active and independent later in life.

When I first started in chiropractic, I thought the job was all about fixing spines.
But over the years, I’ve realised it’s really about helping people trust their bodies again.
I’ve seen how back pain can slowly chip away at someone’s confidence — the way they move, work, even how they laugh. One day it’s just a niggle, and before long it’s changed how they live. Helping someone turn that around, gently and safely, is still the best part of my week.
I’ve always believed the body isn’t broken — it’s doing its best to protect you. My role is to understand what it’s trying to do and guide it back toward balance. That might mean easing tension in the spine, retraining movement, or simply helping you breathe a little easier.
What keeps me going is seeing people realise they can do more than they thought — walking the fells again, picking up grandchildren, or just waking up without that constant stiffness.
It’s those moments that remind me why I chose this path all those years ago.
My aim has never been just to treat backs — it’s to help people move freely, live fully, and enjoy their years with confidence.

Gentle chiropractic care for seniors addresses a real problem: many older adults experience chronic pain but worry that traditional chiropractic methods might be too forceful. At Your Spinal Health in Penrith, we work with seniors who've had bad experiences with aggressive treatment or who simply prefer a calmer approach to managing their spinal health.
The reality is that your spine changes as you age. Bones become more fragile. Discs lose flexibility. Muscles weaken. Standard high-force techniques can aggravate these changes rather than help them. That's where gentle chiropractic care for seniors makes a real difference.
Seniors often struggle with restricted movement, chronic stiffness, and pain that limits daily activities. Getting out of bed becomes harder. Walking feels stiff. Reaching for something on a shelf causes discomfort. These aren't just minor inconveniences, they affect independence and quality of life.
Many older adults assume they simply have to accept pain as part of getting older. That assumption is wrong. With the right approach, you can regain movement, reduce pain, and improve your daily function. The key is finding a chiropractor who understands how to work with an ageing spine safely.
Low-force chiropractic techniques are fundamentally different from the high-velocity joint cracking many people associate with chiropractic care. Instead of sudden, forceful movements, these methods use gentle pressure, slow mobilisation, and specialised equipment designed for sensitive spines.
Common low-force techniques include:
These techniques work because they respect your body's limits. They don't force joints beyond their natural range. Instead, they encourage gradual improvement and allow your nervous system to adapt safely.
The beauty of low-force chiropractic care for seniors is that it can be tailored precisely to your needs. A chiropractor can adjust pressure, speed, and technique based on how your body responds. This personalisation is crucial for older adults who may have arthritis, osteoporosis, or previous injuries. Such careful calibration ensures that manual therapy remains supportive rather than strenuous, a principle that also informs the clinical approach to osteopathy for osteoporosis.
Chronic back pain in seniors rarely has a single cause. It usually results from years of wear, previous injuries, weak core muscles, and poor posture. Managing it requires understanding what's actually driving your pain, not just treating the symptom.
A structured approach to managing chronic back pain in seniors involves several steps:
The mistake many seniors make is expecting one or two appointments to fix years of problems. Realistic improvement takes time.
Managing chronic back pain in seniors also means being honest about what you can and can't do. If lifting heavy objects causes pain, stop lifting them. If sitting for hours makes you stiff, take regular breaks. Your chiropractor can suggest specific modifications that reduce strain without limiting your life.
Your first appointment should feel like a consultation, not an interrogation. A good chiropractor takes time to understand your history, your concerns, and your goals.

Here's what typically happens:
Many seniors feel anxious before their first appointment, especially if they've had negative experiences elsewhere. That's normal. A good chiropractor acknowledges this and works at your pace. You should never feel rushed or pressured.
Ask questions. If something doesn't feel right or you don't understand an explanation, speak up. Your comfort and understanding matter.
This is a question many seniors ask, particularly those on fixed incomes. The answer is complicated and depends on your specific situation.

The NHS does not routinely fund chiropractic care as a standard treatment. However, some NHS services do refer patients to chiropractors in specific circumstances, usually through pain management or rehabilitation programmes.
Most chiropractic care in the UK is private. This means you pay out of pocket or through private health insurance. Some private health insurance plans cover chiropractic treatment, but coverage varies widely. Check your policy to see what's included.
For seniors on limited budgets, this is a real barrier. However, many chiropractors offer flexible payment options, package discounts, or sliding scale fees. It's worth asking about these options during your initial consultation.
Some seniors also explore complementary therapies through the NHS, such as physiotherapy, which may be available for certain conditions. Your GP can discuss what options are available to you specifically.
Not all chiropractors practise the same way. Some focus on high-force adjustments. Others specialise in gentle techniques. Your job is to find someone whose approach matches your needs and comfort level.
Here's what to look for:
When you contact a chiropractor, pay attention to how they respond. Do they take time to answer your questions? Do they ask about your specific concerns? Or do they just try to book you in immediately? The initial conversation tells you a lot about how they'll treat you as a patient.
Your Spinal Health in Penrith specialises in exactly this: gentle chiropractic care for seniors who want clear explanations, a personalised approach, and genuine respect for their concerns. Over 25 years of experience and more than 7000 people helped means we understand what works for older adults seeking lasting relief.
Starting chiropractic care is a commitment. Avoid these common mistakes that undermine results:
The most common mistake is choosing a chiropractor based on proximity or cost without checking their approach or qualifications. Take time to find someone whose philosophy matches your needs. This investment upfront pays dividends in your long-term health.
Chronic back pain, neck stiffness, and restricted movement don't have to be permanent features of ageing. Gentle chiropractic care for seniors offers a safe, effective path to regaining your mobility and confidence. Gentle chiropractic care can be safe for seniors with osteoporosis when performed by a qualified chiropractor who understands your condition. Low-force techniques avoid the aggressive movements that traditional chiropractic uses. Your chiropractor will assess your bone density and adjust their approach accordingly. Always inform your chiropractor of any osteoporosis diagnosis before treatment begins, and discuss any concerns about your specific health situation during your initial consultation.
Gentle chiropractic care uses low-force methods such as soft tissue therapy, mobilisation, and targeted adjustments without forceful joint cracking. Traditional chiropractic often involves high-velocity adjustments that produce audible 'cracks'. Gentle approaches are particularly suited to seniors because they reduce strain on ageing joints and muscles, minimise discomfort during treatment, and are often more suitable for those with previous injuries or anxiety about forceful treatment.
Gentle chiropractic care addresses restricted movement by reducing spinal stiffness, relieving muscle tension, and improving joint function without aggressive force. As we age, our spines naturally lose flexibility and our muscles tighten. Low-force techniques gradually restore mobility, reduce pain that limits movement, and help you regain confidence in daily activities. Regular gentle adjustments combined with personalised advice can help maintain better posture and movement patterns over time.
You do not need a GP referral to see a chiropractor in the UK. You can book directly with a registered chiropractor. However, if your GP has already assessed your condition, bringing those notes to your first appointment helps your chiropractor understand your full medical history. Some private health insurance schemes may require referrals, so check your policy. Your chiropractor will always work with your GP if your condition requires medical input.
